What trees should be removed?

Dead Trees – Trees that have reached the end of their lifespan are a hazard in our urban forest. Branches will become brittle and break, pests will move in on the decaying wood, and the area surrounding the tree is at risk as the tree decays.

Diseased Trees – Trees suffering from disease can become unstable, posing a risk of falling and causing injury or damage to property. Although many pests and tree illnesses can be managed and extend the life of the tree through soil health and plant health care options, others may have our Arborist suggesting it is time to consider removal.

Trees with Structural Concerns & Storm Damage: Trees that have been damaged by storms may have weakened structures, making them dangerous during future weather events. Major breaks in live branches leave trees susceptible to pests and disease, as well as causing structural damage

Trees Too Close to Structures: Trees that are too close to homes, power lines, or other structures can pose a risk of damage from falling branches or roots causing structural issues.

Poorly Selected Trees– Trees that have grown too large for their location may overshadow gardens, block views, or interfere with power lines and compromise structures. Though most trees that are a bit too big for their space can be maintained with regular pruning, some homeowners prefer to just start fresh and replant the space with a more appropriate tree. Our arborists are always more than happy to help assess the space and make suggestions on a species that would thrive better in the space you have.

Poorly Planted Trees – Trees planted improperly are a common candidate for removal. These young trees won’t establish roots well, and we usually suggest either replanting it with better practices if the tree is young enough, or replacing it entirely with a new specimen to give you a better start to a healthy tree long term.

Trees With Problem Roots: Aggressive roots can invade sewer systems, crack sidewalks, and damage foundations, requiring removal to prevent further issues as the tree grows in a space it doesn’t have room to grow.

Tree Removal FAQs

Why do I need a professional to remove a tree? Isn’t it just taking it out with a chainsaw?

-Tree removal can be complex and dangerous, and requires skill and equipment to get done right! While each homeowner has their priorities on DIY, tree removal carries significant risk to both the property and the person performing the removal. With us, you have the peace of mind that removal is done by a trained team of professionals with specialized equipment (think LOTS of different types and sizes of saws, aerial lifts, wood chippers, big trucks, climbing gear, stump grinders). Additionally important with tree removals is liability insurance. We’re not new to this trade, and know that the dangers of tree removal runs risk even for the best team. Make sure anyone you hire for tree removal (or any contracting work) is an actively licensed contractor with the Contractor’s State License Board, pulls any needed permits for removal, and holds both worker’s compensation insurance and liability insurance.

Do you do stump grinding too?

Yep! We have a fleet of stump grinding equipment, and offer stump grinding after removal. Our Arborists would be more than happy to make sure your desire for the space of the tree is all part of the work.

What about underground utility lines? Is that a concern?

Utility lines are definitely of concern when removing trees and grinding stumps! When working with us, we’ll handle arranging for your utility companies to come out and mark the areas we’ll be working in to ensure the safety of your property and of our team.

I’m worried about roots sprouting – is there anything we can do?

There can be! We have a plant health care team that can arrange for trees to receive a treatment that helps suppress root sprouts after removal. We’ll typically perform this treatment about two weeks before we come out to perform the full removal, and it can help mitigate the sprouts that come up as root stock later on. This is called a Bark Band Treatment and involves our licensed plant health care specialists splicing into a small part of the tree trunk, applying a root suppressant compound, and allowing the tree to move it through its vascular system naturally.

What happens to the wood after removal?

This depends on the tree and what you would like! Most clients have us haul it to be composted municipally. If you’d like to, we’d be happy to cut it into manageable firewood size rounds for you if you’d like to keep it. Especially large wood (think big Redwoods or towering Oaks that needed to be removed) can be arranged to be donated to wood reclamation sites like Urban Wood Rescue through the Sacramento Tree Foundation and given a new life through local artisans and woodworkers. Let us know ahead of time if you have a special vision for your tree’s wood, and we’ll help make it happen however we can!

I’m looking for the lowest bid for tree removal – will you be it?

Probably not. We have a team of trained tree care experts, full insurance, bonding, and licensing, and specialized equipment meant for simple or complex tree removal. While we are a local small business with low overhead and keep our pricing competitive within our professional peers, we are likely not going to be the lowest bid you can find to get the tree down – but with us, you’ll have peace of mind and high quality, professional care each step of the way.

I think the tree I want removed is protected. Can you still remove it?

With a permit, absolutely! Protected trees still need to be removed when they decline or become dangerous to property, and our Arborists will work with your county or city to get permits for the work. Check out our FAQs about local tree ordinances and tree permitting here, or give us a call and chat with one of our Arborists about tree permitting!

Can I get the spot where I had a tree removed, replanted?

Usually yes! Make sure to chat with your arborist when they’re out about your goals for the spot the tree took up, and we can discuss options for a great new replacement (and we’d be happy to get it done for you, too!). We’ll just need to make sure the stump is ground out well, and pick an appropriate species for the spot.

How much does it cost to remove a tree?

This is where our Arborists come in! They’ll need to see the tree and its surrounding property to make an accurate estimate for you. Tree removal varies a lot by size, wood type, condition of the tree, site accessibility, and how the tree can be removed. We’d be more than happy to get you a complimentary estimate so you know what to budget for, and answer any questions you have about the process.

Reviews from Sacramento, CA

“Fantastic company and super knowledgeable staff! Lisa spent over an hour with me going over each of the trees on my lot and explaining the best ways to trim – or not trim – them. No effort to upsell, just going through the best ways to accomplish my goals!! Fantastic price, too! Very reasonable for the scope of work. Plus on the day of, they actually trimmed two additional trees in order to get at the main tree without disturbing my neighbors. I can’t recommend them highly enough. You will not be disappointed!”

-Maria, Sacramento

“We got quotes for a smaller job and a bigger job – we went with the bigger job. The folks who came out to give the estimates were fantastic, kind, knowledgeable, and respected the deep reverence I have for my large Magnolia and Avocado trees. Their crew out this morning and each member of the team introduced themselves and were all super friendly, professional, and did an amazing job. They were accommodating to our yard furniture, helped move items, checked in to make sure the work was done to my satisfaction, cleaned up, and were really a great crew!”

-Karen, Sacramento

“This is my second time having Capital Arborists trim and shape trees and tall Camellia bushes in my yard and once again I am very pleased with their service. They really listen to what I want done – no foliage touching the roof of my house, shaping large Camellia bushes and a tree – and follow those requests exactly… I will definitely call them next year!”

-Elaine, Sacramento
